Another Gold Wings. This one had the Swemmer board in it, but no music and something had arced and blown a fuse on it among other eccentricities.
At some point, the line fuse had been put in a twist cap fuse holder and laid in the cabinet. That had touched a ground and sparked per the owner. I insulated and secured that, and replaced the 12v filter cap.
Someone had done the wire nut ground mods in the cabinet, but I did them on the boards which I think is the more important. The aux power supply board had leaky caps on all of them. They were all replaced. I’m seeing this on almost every System 80 with that board and original caps now.
The power supply was very spotty and not holding 5vdc well at all. It took a few passes to get it happy and sturdy including a new pot, new lm338k, new male pins and a new female connector on the output. It finally put out a stable and properly dialed logic voltage.
There’s not much documentation on the MA-766 sound board. The LED was locked on, so that at least isolated which of the two 6502s to zero in on. Without much to go on, I figured I’d start with reseating the ROMs to see if I got lucky. When I pulled the YROM 1, it was blazing hot, which isn’t correct. I was able to ascertain a copy of the ROM image from a fellow pinballer and burn a new 2764. With the new ROM in, the sound board LED pulsed as normal and music was back.
Last thing I noticed was the LED bulb not lighting up in the back. Everything is wired in on it right though and voltage/fuse is good. My bet is the grounding out of that AC fuse sent an overcurrent to the tube. I don’t have another to try and the owner does, so they’re going to pop one in when it’s back home.
